GradeTypical markGrade point
High Distinction (HD)85–1007
Distinction (D / DN)75–846
Credit (C / CR)65–745
Pass (P / PS)50–644
Fail (N / F)0–490 (UQ: 1–3)

Mark ranges vary slightly between universities. Some, like Monash and Deakin, also publish a 4-point GPA, which you can estimate by dividing by 7 and multiplying by 4.

Example

Four 2-unit UQ courses with grades 7, 6, 5 and 6: (7 + 6 + 5 + 6) × 2 ÷ 8 = 6.00.

GPA for uni admissions and ATAR

GPA is used for honours entry, postgraduate study, scholarships and graduate medicine. School leavers are ranked by ATAR instead, which is calculated from scaled subject results by each state’s admissions centre.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good GPA in Australia?

On the 7-point scale, 5.0 (Credit average) is solid, 5.5 to 6.0 is strong, and 6.0 or higher (Distinction average) is excellent and often needed for honours and medicine.

How is UQ GPA calculated?

UQ uses grades 1 to 7. Each course grade is multiplied by its units (usually 2), added up and divided by the total units. Enter UQ grades directly in the calculator.

Do fails count in my GPA?

Yes. A fail is included and pulls your GPA down. Most universities count it as 0; UQ counts grades 1, 2 and 3 at face value.

What should I enter as units?

Use your subject's credit points or units. If every subject is the same size, leave them all at 1.

What is the difference between GPA and WAM?

GPA uses grade bands (7, 6, 5, 4). WAM (weighted average mark) averages your actual percentage marks. Some universities, such as Melbourne and Sydney, report WAM instead.

Is this the GEMSAS GPA?

GEMSAS calculates a weighted GPA for medicine that gives your final years more weight. Your standard GPA here is a starting point, but the GEMSAS figure will differ.
