How middle school GPA works
Middle schools usually report letter grades without credits. Your GPA is simply the average of the grade points: A = 4, B = 3, C = 2, D = 1, F = 0 (with plus and minus if your school uses them).
Example report card
| Class | Grade | Points |
|---|---|---|
| English | A | 4.0 |
| Math | B+ | 3.3 |
| Science | A- | 3.7 |
| Social studies | B | 3.0 |
| Spanish | A | 4.0 |
| Art | A | 4.0 |
GPA = 22.0 ÷ 6 = 3.67.
Honor roll
Many middle schools use 3.0 for honor roll and 3.5 or higher (or all As and Bs) for high honors. Your school’s handbook has the exact rule.
Frequently asked questions
Does middle school GPA matter?
It doesn't go on college applications, but some high schools use it for honors placement, magnet programs and private school admissions.
How do I calculate my middle school GPA without credits?
Give every class the same weight (1). The calculator then averages the grade points of your classes.
Should I include PE and electives?
Follow your school's rule. Many middle schools include every class; some only count core subjects (English, math, science, social studies).
What is a good middle school GPA?
A 3.0 (B average) is good, and 3.5 or higher usually qualifies for honor roll.
