How GPA is calculated
GPA (grade point average) turns your letter grades into one number on a 4.0 scale. Courses with more credits count more, so an A in a 4-credit class helps more than an A in a 1-credit lab.
GPA = Σ (grade points × credits) ÷ Σ credits
Worked example
| Course | Grade | Credits | Points × credits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Biology | A (4.0) | 4 | 16.0 |
| English | B+ (3.3) | 3 | 9.9 |
| History | B (3.0) | 3 | 9.0 |
| Spanish | A- (3.7) | 3 | 11.1 |
| Total | 13 | 46.0 |
GPA = 46.0 ÷ 13 = 3.54.
Grade point scale (4.0)
| Grade | Percent | Points | Grade | Percent | Points |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| A+ / A | 93–100 | 4.0 | C | 73–76 | 2.0 |
| A- | 90–92 | 3.7 | C- | 70–72 | 1.7 |
| B+ | 87–89 | 3.3 | D+ | 67–69 | 1.3 |
| B | 83–86 | 3.0 | D | 63–66 | 1.0 |
| B- | 80–82 | 2.7 | D- | 60–62 | 0.7 |
| C+ | 77–79 | 2.3 | F | 0–59 | 0.0 |
Weighted vs. unweighted GPA
High schools often report two GPAs. The unweighted GPA treats every class the same. The weighted GPA rewards harder classes: set the Level column to Honors (+0.5) or AP / IB (+1.0). An A in AP Calculus then counts as 5.0. Colleges usually look at both, and many recalculate your GPA with their own rules.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate my GPA?
Convert each letter grade to grade points (A = 4.0, B = 3.0 and so on), multiply by the course credits, add them up and divide by the total credits. The calculator does this instantly.
What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?
Unweighted GPA uses the 4.0 scale for every class. Weighted GPA adds a bonus for harder classes, usually 0.5 for Honors and 1.0 for AP or IB, so it can go above 4.0.
How do I calculate my cumulative GPA?
Enter your current cumulative GPA and the credits you've completed in the optional boxes. The calculator combines them with this term to give your new cumulative GPA.
What GPA do I need to raise my cumulative GPA to 3.5?
Use the Target GPA planner: enter your current GPA and credits, your target (3.5) and the credits you still have to take. The calculator shows the GPA you need over those credits, or tells you if it isn't possible.
What GPA is good?
A 3.0 (B average) is solid. A 3.5 or higher is strong for selective colleges and most dean's lists. Many scholarships ask for 3.0 to 3.5.
Do A+ grades count as more than 4.0?
On most US scales an A+ is 4.0, the same as an A. A few universities, such as Arizona State, give 4.33 for an A+.
What should I enter for credits in high school?
Use the credit value on your report card, often 1 for a year-long class or 0.5 for a semester. If every class counts the same, leave credits at the default.
