How high school GPA works
Each semester grade becomes grade points. Your unweighted GPA averages those points on a 4.0 scale. Your weighted GPA adds a bonus for harder classes, so an A in AP Biology counts as 5.0 instead of 4.0.
| Grade | Regular | Honors (+0.5) | AP / IB (+1.0) |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | 4.0 | 4.5 | 5.0 |
| A- | 3.7 | 4.2 | 4.7 |
| B+ | 3.3 | 3.8 | 4.3 |
| B | 3.0 | 3.5 | 4.0 |
| B- | 2.7 | 3.2 | 3.7 |
| C | 2.0 | 2.5 | 3.0 |
| D | 1.0 | 1.5 | 2.0 |
| F | 0.0 | 0.0 | 0.0 |
Failing grades never get a bonus.
Worked example
AP English A, Honors Chemistry B+, Algebra II A-, US History B, Spanish A (all 1 credit).
- Unweighted: (4.0 + 3.3 + 3.7 + 3.0 + 4.0) ÷ 5 = 3.60
- Weighted: (5.0 + 3.8 + 3.7 + 3.0 + 4.0) ÷ 5 = 3.90

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate my high school GPA?
Convert each semester grade to points (A = 4, B = 3, C = 2, D = 1, F = 0), add a bonus for Honors or AP classes if you want the weighted GPA, and average them by credits.
Is a 4.0 weighted GPA good?
A 4.0 weighted GPA usually means mostly As and Bs with some advanced classes. For an unweighted GPA, 4.0 means straight As.
Do colleges use weighted or unweighted GPA?
Both appear on applications. Many colleges recalculate your GPA using only core academic classes and their own weighting rules.
What credits should I use?
Use your school's credit values, often 1 per year-long class or 0.5 per semester class. If every class counts the same, leave credits at 1.
Does my high school use 0.5 for Honors?
Most schools add 0.5 for Honors and 1.0 for AP, IB and dual enrollment, but some add 1.0 for Honors too. Check your school's program of studies.
When do colleges see my GPA?
Most applications use your cumulative GPA through junior year, plus first-semester senior grades for regular decision.
