Unweighted 4.0 scale
| Grade | Points | Grade | Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| A+ / A | 4.0 | C+ | 2.3 |
| A- | 3.7 | C | 2.0 |
| B+ | 3.3 | C- | 1.7 |
| B | 3.0 | D+ / D / D- | 1.3 / 1.0 / 0.7 |
| B- | 2.7 | F | 0.0 |
Some high schools don’t use plus or minus. In that case every A is 4.0, every B is 3.0 and so on; pick the plain letter in the calculator.
Example
Grades A, A-, B+, B, A in five 1-credit classes: (4.0 + 3.7 + 3.3 + 3.0 + 4.0) ÷ 5 = 3.60 unweighted.
Frequently asked questions
What is an unweighted GPA?
A GPA on a 4.0 scale where an A is always 4.0, no matter how hard the class is.
Why do colleges look at unweighted GPA?
Because schools weight classes differently, the unweighted GPA is easier to compare between applicants.
Is a 3.5 unweighted GPA good?
Yes. A 3.5 is a B+ to A- average and meets the bar for many selective colleges and merit scholarships.
How do I convert a weighted GPA to unweighted?
Remove the bonus from each advanced class and average again. Entering your grades here without Honors or AP levels does exactly that.
