How it works

Midterm score needed = (Target − Current × (1 − Weight)) ÷ Weight

The weight here is the midterm’s share of everything graded up to and including the midterm. If your syllabus says homework 15%, quizzes 15%, midterm 20%, the midterm is 20 ÷ 50 = 40% of the grade at that point.

Worked example

Homework and quizzes average 88%. You want 85% after the midterm, and the midterm is 40% of the grade so far.

(85 − 88 × 0.6) ÷ 0.4 = (85 − 52.8) ÷ 0.4 = 80.5% on the midterm.

Midterm study plan

  • Use your score target to decide how many practice problems you need, not just how many hours.
  • Review returned quizzes first; midterms often reuse their question types.
  • After the midterm, enter the result in the grade calculator so you know where you stand before the final.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a midterm affect my grade?

It depends on its weight. A midterm worth 20% can move your grade by up to 20 points, so a strong midterm can lift you a full letter.

What if I haven't done anything else yet?

If the midterm is the first major grade, use your homework and quiz average as the current grade. The answer tells you what the midterm needs to be for your target.

Does this count the final exam?

No. It calculates your grade right after the midterm. Use the final grade calculator later to plan for the final.

My class has two midterms. What do I enter?

Enter the weight of the midterm you're about to take. Your current grade should already include the first midterm.
